before the actual sermon, i wanna give a mini sermon, given by none other than me!!! sorry ar derek, you never sign copyright law say i cannot copy you.

in John 15:2 it is says:"He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.".

according to dictionary.com, pruning is "To cut off or remove dead or living parts or branches of (a plant, for example) to improve shape or growth.". God the gardener will sometimes cut back on our dead parts, such as sin and bad habits, so that we can grow better. this may be painful, cos God will take something out of your life. you'll feel empty at first, but God will fill up that hole with His peace, love and joy.

but pruning not only involves removal dead parts. it sometimes involve the removal of living parts, which represents the good parts in our lives. this is so that we would be even more fruitful. for example, singing is not a bad thing. one day God may ask derek to stop singing, take away this gift from him, give him soar throat or something like that. He may do this in order for derek to grow stronger.

examples from the bible, you may ask? God did not give Abraham a son, He took that part away from him at first. the Irony is that God promises that His discendants will be as many as the sands on the shore, yet he is without a child for the first 99 years of his life! why did God do this? so that Abraham's faith will be strengthened. after God gave him a son, he did not even hesitate to sacrifice him, showing complete faith in God.

Moses, God took everything from him. his status, power, wealth, women, security, everything. God cut away so much that Moses felt worthless. eventually, after the successful pruning, Moses led the people of Israel into the Promised Land.

Samson, God took away his eyes and his strength by handing him over to the philistines. eventually he mustered enough strength to kill so many philistines that the bible did not state it's number.

Job, God allowed satan to take EVERYTHING from him, his children, his livestock, his fortunes, even his health. he was covered with boils that even when he sits down, his butt feels painful. i wonder how he pees. in the end God blessed him with so much more!!!

yes, pruning can be painful. it takes a time of brokeness before God can fill you up. God will have to break you down, make you humble before Him before He can work on you, just like a potter have to soften the clay.

for example, alkene is a very important hydrocarbon, it is the starting meterial for plastics. alkenes cannot be extracted from crude oil, but can only be obtained by cracking of big alkane molecules. big alkane molecules can be extracted straight from the crude oil, but it is not that useful by it's own, as it is big and difficult to combust, mind as well just crack it. by cracking, a process whereby big alkane molecules are passed through a nickel cataylst and are heated at 4000*C, the big useless alkane molecules will be broken down into smaller useful alkene molecules.

similarly, in order for God to successfully use us, we must go through a period of cracking, to be broken down so that God can fill up the gaps. it will often be painful (try 4000*c and tell me if it's painful or not), but the rewards are much better. when you guys suffer, remember romans 8:28,"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.". God always works for the good of all those who love Him, so if you love Him, rest assured that the pain you feel now will one ay be fruitful.

ok, so i am a chemistry freak and it was mdm yaw who shared romans 8:28 with me. this mini sermon is not mini at all. haha. ah well. here comes the real thing!
